‘A hell of a lot’: Pensioners disturbed by $25 a week rent uptick

Pensioners living in Ōpōtiki’s Peria House flats say the $25 a week rent rise undoubtedly are a struggle to pay and they will have to go along with.

However , the type of society that owns the petit appartement says although the rent rise is in fact unfortunate, it is inevitable after connected with underinvestment by previous owners.

The 20 pensioner flats at Peria House used to be originally owned by the Ōpōtiki Land Council and have since been got along by several charitable trusts. Additionally designed to be an affordable option for consumers on a fixed income but now condominium people in paid employment while well.

The rentals are now managed by Peria World Incorporated, formerly the Opotiki Recent Peoples Home Society, which possibly owns the Peria Village retiring village.

Peria Society chair Gloria Lewis said not much maintenance had been followed on the flats since 2016 and also the society had to do a lot of work for them back to standard.

She said it aimed to keep rents modest, but home. The highest rent is $160 few days.
