Christchurch City Council to consider accepting Citizens’ War Memorial as gift

The Christchurch Location Council will this week consider whether it should accept the Citizens’ War Memorial in Cathedral Square to become a gift.

The Chapel Property Trustees wrote to the authorities on November 5, offering to assist you to gift the memorial.

The memorial, which commemorates Cantabrians who died in war, requires to be moved from its current site near to Christ Church Cathedral so the reinstatement work on the cathedral can go on.

It has some earthquake damage and rust on the inside, including needs to be repaired and strengthened.

Under the terms of the offer meant to the council, CPT will condition and lodge resource and producing consent applications for the relocation of their memorial and also commit the balance on funds from the Christchurch Earthquake Hidden gem Trust to making the move consider place.

The company set up in order to really oversee the reinstatement of the Tall, Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd, will deconstruct the memorial together with prepare the component parts for the purpose of transport and storage.

If it accepts the gift, of the council will be responsible for identifying a site for the memorial, providing temporary storage for it, and funding in addition to overseeing its repair and promoting.

The council at this time has $270, 000 in its Upcoming Plan for repairs and refurbishment on this memorial as it has always stolen responsibility for its maintenance, under concurrence with the church.

On a report prepared for elected men, council staff recommend councillors start processing the gift – and have picked public land near the old Court arrest Kiosk in Cathedral Square currently being the preferred site for the memorial.

Staff recently met with senior representatives of the Returned and Services’ Association who are in favour of retaining the most important memorial in Cathedral Square, during council land as close as they can to its current site.
