Climate workers fighting against the development of an air port in Tarras pretended to die eigene in front of Christchurch city councillors at a meeting on Thursday.

Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL) introduced the purchase of 750 hectares to get a project in July.

CIAL is 75 per cent bought by the council through its complicité company, Christchurch City Holdings Limited (CCHL).

The protesters attended the city council’s finance and gratifaction committee meeting dressed in black and buying grave markers.

Speaking for Destruction of life Rebellion ÅŒtautahi, David Goldsmith said it was hard to believe a new airport had been mooted in the middle of a climate disaster.

“No amount of durability greenwashing can hide the fact that enhanced flight capacity will mean increased exhausts. Our elected representatives owe ratepayers an explanation at how this project can possibly getting consistent with the council’s declaration of a natural environment emergency. ”

Sara Campbell, also with Extinction Rebellion ÅŒtautahi, said the proposed airport processing raises issues of equity and after that climate justice.

“Worldwide, 1 per cent of the population accounts for 50 per cent of aviation emissions. ”

The debatable development has ruffled feathers a number of locals in Tarras and with Queenstown mayor Jim Boult.
