The Māori Social gathering is welcoming the resignation related to Oranga Tamariki chief executive Grainne Moss, after she faced backlash beyond the mistreatment of Māori tamariki and moreover sustained pressure from leading characters within the Māori Party.
“We have forced Oranga Tamariki into acknowledging the institutional racism, ” Māori Party Co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said.
“Given that she has credited the continued failings and systemic racism on her watch, Grainne Moss tendering her resignation was the only right move to make. ”
6 inquiries were launched against Moss in 2019 after a Hawke’s Bay area incident revealed Oranga Tamariki unrestricted workers repeatedly trying to uplift girl from hospital despite the mother’s protest ? resistance.
“Our Māori Party policy, released during the election, is very clear – we must close Oranga Tamariki and start again via an independent Mokopuna Māori agency, lunch break Ngarewa-Packer said.
“The Government must now use that policy and follow the tip of the Children’s Commissioner – commence the process to disband Oranga Tamariki and shift the powers along with responsibility to an independent by Māori, for Māori agency.
“As a first step returning to achieving that, Kelvin Davis preferably should appoint a senior Māori frontrunner as Acting CEO whose person job is to dismantle Oranga Tamariki and ensure there is a smooth transition up to the new regime. ”
