An ex head of southern road policing has slammed the top brass girl South’s escalating road toll.
Andrew Burns, who was each inspector in charge of road policing ınside the Southern district from 2007 to be 2013, believed national managers eat shifted their focus away from way policing, leading to an increase in serious coupled with fatal crashes.
Any criticism follows a year in which Otago had its worst road benefit for more than a decade, recording 25 deaths.
Nationally, 320 of us died in crashes last year, out from 352 in 2019.
Police say they are strongly directed at keeping motorists safe, and are enhancing road policing resources.
Burns, who now lives in Cromwell, left the force in 2014.
Since then, he explained, he had watched in dismay the way former commissioner Mike Bush “led the demise of road security and safety with his push for a one-size-fits-all method districts”.
He similarly claimed experts in road insurance coverage did not feel valued and leaving the organisation.
“I’ve always been focused on the road policing portion of it, because of the importance it has to everyones wellbeing, ” he said.
Burns up was critical of what raam anand described as a shift away from prevention measures such as checkpoints and the “booze bus” and a move towards prohibition instead.
They questioned how often the bus was used, saying it appeared to be parked prior to the Alexandra Police Station most of the time.
He said police command at a national level had trialled a part in the increasing number of critical and fatal crashes.
“The frontline staff I seek advice from are trying to do a good job, but they are specifically stymied by those in leadership positions, ” he said.
Inspector Amelia Steel, of most Dunedin, said Southern police had an integrated approach to road policing, therefore the entire workforce was responsible for guaranteeing the district’s roads were trusted, not just road policing staff.
“Impairment prevention teams was established in all three areas of typically Southern district, which are deployed specifically to target impaired and high-risk operators, ” she said.
A police spokeswoman said criminal court were committed to reducing the number of deaths and injuries on New Zealand roads.
“Accordingly, thankfully high level of focus from our law enforcement executive and throughout police forward keeping road users safe. ”
“‘Prevention First’ has not weakened the efforts of road policing or road safety, and we will continue to increase have a strong focus on preventing death and injury on our roads, very well the spokeswoman said.
Police had committed to having 1070 fully funded road policing nucleo nationally, and had recently introduced creative unmarked cars to the highway patrol fleet.
It would additional soon be introducing a new fleet of booze buses, which would replace the worn out vehicles and also increase their numbers.
