Motorsport legend Greg Murphy says the appalling holiday road tarif shows New Zealanders need more desirable education before getting behind the wheel.
Eleven people were killed on the highway between Christmas Event and yesterday morning – two were killed in the same year or so last year.
Greg Murphy who helps run Avenue Smart, a driver education time, said it was too easy to get the particular driving licence.
“I’m really saddened again in front of the situation and the fact that it’s a continuous issue and we’re not creation any changes, ” Murphy stated.
“The shares standard comments by those that within high places every holiday period normally wearing thin on all New Zealanders; it’s just the same stuff every year to words are not fixing the problem we are looking for actions. ”
Murphy said the licensing concept was archaic and it was coming back an overhaul.
“We need to look after drivers considerably by training them better, ensuring that they are more aware and prepared for the details they face every day on the driveways.
“We should start with better theory around the town rules, teach people about the physics of motor vehicles, and teach consumers about safety. ”
There was nothing in the current training and licensing system which taught motorists why choose they needed tread on tyres, he said.
“The other thing that isn’t thought is the anti-lock braking system (ABS), When i probably 80 per cent of people tend not to even know what it is or what it does and it’s the first line of defence while in driving a motor vehicle, ” Murphy dietary fad.
All models imported into the country must have SIX PACK ABS, and last year Waka Kotahi managed to get mandatory for all new model motorcycles over 125cc to have the system.
“If you throw on the brakes it doesn’t lock the front-end wheels of your car – in order that much as you brake they will at present rotate which means you still have control over the vehicle, ” Murphy said.
As well as more theory classes and assessment, he said there needs to be a much bigger practical component to droit testing.
“You should have to do a course where you actually do awareness training, learn about emergency developing, do hazard identification, and learn about peripheral awareness, ” Murphy told me.
“It’s perfect spending millions of dollars on updating city roads and installing barriers but it does not take ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, ” he said.
“I’ve tried to talk to ministers and then officials about my concerns the but nothing eventuates or changes.
“The toll those road deaths take on families combined with communities needs to be considered when conclusions are being made. ”
