A series of “small water explosions” were detected on Whakaari / White Island yesterday.
Science agency GNS detected the low-energy explosions making use of seismic and acoustic air difficulty sensors at the island.
They occurred at 3pm on Tuesday – and experienced short-lived, lasting about 30 minutes, the main agency said.
At least 20 individual pulses came about, which may have produced “minor traces” of ash near the vent number of minutes.
MetService’s satellite images didn’t detect a ash in the atmosphere, it rumoured.
Meanwhile, visions from the island’s webcam suggested far vigorous pulses of steam might well have come from the active vent of the volcano at the time, GNS said.
Activity has since taken back to a low level, it said. I would say the island’s volcanic alert level continues as at 1 and the aviation colorations code will stay “green”.
“While Volcanic Alert Rank 1 is mostly associated with environmental people from france, eruptions can still occur with little or no warning. ”
The lowest alert level is 0, classed as “no volcanic unrest”. Level 1 means “minor scenic unrest”.
Number one hazards of alert level – include discharge of steam and as a result hot volcanic gases, earthquakes, landslides and hydrothermal activity.
GNS volcanology team chairman Nico Fournier said explosions like these have not been common since the 12 , 9 eruption last year.
“But we have seen your many times in the past on the volcano. Simply by during 2012/13.
“These small steam explosions can be difficult to spot on the webcams and we single get to detect them thanks to our favorite seismic and acoustic monitoring small on the island. ”
Whakaari/White Island erupted on Until 9 last year at 2 . 11pm, claiming the lives of 22 render and tour guides.
There were 47 people on the island because it erupted. Many survivors were badly injured.
