Southern region Island on alert for fires as summer starts

Fire and Emergency presents moved all of Otago to a constrained fire season as the region speedily dries out with more hot weather predicted.

North Canterbury proceeds on low alert but that may in part thanks to breaks in vegetation caused by big fires in recent years.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s originate is being forecast as a tale of two islands.

Niwa meteorologist Ben Knowles said spring and coil may be starting off cool but it will never stay that way.
