Central Otago benefits growers are rubbishing claims exact turning down New Zealanders for area fruit-picking work as they would prefer good value foreign labour.
It is follows union concerns that lots of people are applying for jobs, but are burst out weeks for feedback if they get them at all .
Orchard owners have been with the Government to allow more seasonal workforce in from Pacific countries for with the summer fruit harvest.
Stephen Darling runs Darlings Fruit in Ettrick, Central Otago, growing mainly apples and apricots.
He has had a great number of job applications, and said they were doing their best to get back to people immediately after they could.
“Of folks that we receive, we assess the people and we respond back to those. Experts do background checks as best we can and also endeavour to select the people that we try to think are going to be best suited for the job, neither everyone is and unfortunately I think might some misconceptions about horticultural tasks, about orchard work, ” Dear said.
“That’s why is this we do our best to make sure that customers are suited to those roles. ”
Amalgamated Workers’ Union to the south secretary Calvin Fisher said foreign workers and New Zealanders hard to find receive the same pay rate, unfortunately orchards found other benefits from commissioning further from home.
“They charge the Islanders up to $150 a week for accommodation. They’ve single got – I think – thirty-two hours as a minimum. They don’t have to pay KiwiSaver and they move them around on the grounds that required so there’s clearly business concern benefits in having Island work here, ” Fisher said.
The Government previously publicised 2000 additional RSE workers will be able to applique in early next year to help with the reap, along with incentives for unemployed Outstanding Zealanders to take on seasonal work, in addition to $1000 for people who complete jobs connected six weeks or longer.
Sid Birtles manages Remarkable Orchards in Roxburgh, and said many employed New Zealanders first. Look cherry and apricot picking and in addition packing was due to be done the following month.

“That’s rubbish. We’re truly thankful to pay minimum wage anyway and that is exactly across the board no matter who you are. There are credits for people to encourage them to do more for the there’s certainly urgency in the picking up and the timeframe. Fruit doesn’t loose time waiting for tomorrow in some cases. ”
Room for improvement
Summerfruit New Zealand chairman Tim Jones said the industry had been overloaded with applications after putting out a nice call for help with harvesting.
But he agreed they should do better.
“Growers could plainly be doing a better job additionally, the message needs to go out to declaring no to prop that really it is polite – at a minimum – to respond to the inquiries they’re just getting and to give people much more00 information about what jobs are available, the particular conditions are and when those jobs kick off. ”
Martin Milne owns Cheeki Cherries, which harvests about 100 tonnes of cherries across three orchards around Cromwell.
He has hired an agency to handle hiring pickers and packers for the past four years. During maximum harvest, he’ll have more than percent pickers.
“I assume there is a lot of work around sasdasd… it’s just coming up to the bottom of December and beginning having to do with January. That’s when things are surely going to crank up. I would expect shed weight be getting employed by then, ” Milne said.

Summerfruit NZ has appointed a seasonal labour coordinator to help the industry.
And with a large number of applications, Jones defined the fruit industry should have enough installers to keep the harvest from passing pear-shaped.
