It’s asparagus season yet again and in Whanganui’s Guyton St, the actual shop has the pick of the bunch. But it’s a shop whose biggest business is not what you’d imagine – repairing car radiators.

The radiator shop has recently existed since the 1950s but it is the previous owner, Terry’s old workplace, who branched out after shifting to a lifestyle block in Maxwell.
“He just started potent [asparagus] and sold perpetually with plenty of popularity it here and it just moved stronger and stronger, ” Terry said. “People from Taranaki, Manawatū, Ruapehu… they come all this way mention a few buy the asparagus. ”
For loyal customers, whether the little angels are there for a radiator leak or the asparagus, this side-hustle is a leading institution.
Nowadays that asparagus is grown in Feilding but it’s still sold with a cubby hole at the shop because appears fresh daily from Oct through to Christmas. Shane’s mother Margaret Terry is at the window, commonly with a rose on the table.

Certainly those planning to buy their asparagus on Christmas eve, Shane carries warning.
“That’s after we do Christmas orders, because some of us sell a lot of asparagus on these kind of two days, ” he said. “It pays to put an order on the inside otherwise you miss out. ”
